Wow, what a quick, imaginative, entertainingly written collection of shorts! There are consistent amounts of heart and humor, no matter how dark any story might get, and you can tell Douglas was having just as much fun writing these as I was reading them. His passion and respect for both the material and the "writing" in general, is half the fun here, and I can't wait to read more from this writer. Be it horror, fantasy, or science fiction, Douglas' influences must span the last couple hundred years at the very least, and a true love for all things escapist runs rampant throughout. Seriously, I love to read, but it's not often I have this much damn fun doing it!Product details

And this is just one of the offerings in Alexander Douglas' new collection, Perversities.
A personal favorite is Bait, in which a fisherman put out of work by the Gulf Oil Spill is himself lured in by a most unusual woman. In Straightjacket, a man credits his father for making him what he is today, however inadvertently. In A Pear Tree is for those made to feel like outsiders by the Christmastime emphasis on home and family, and that's most of us.
This author clearly feels no great need to dance to anyone's music but his own. The result is well worth reading.
Alexander Douglas' debut collection of short stories is well-named. He has a singular way of looking at the world--kind of sideways and aslant--and that translates into stories from peculiar points of view. The stories range from micro-flash--cunningly crafted paragraphs that provide a gut punch to longer stories that explore love and lust and the gradations in between. Noir fans will particularly enjoy "Dancing for Chiquita" and "In a Pear Tree," which explore themes of alienation and rejection in very (VERY) different ways, but many of the stories defy easy genre categorization. This is particularly true of "Loving Rosalind," which is a love story unlike any you've read before. If you like offbeat fiction that plays with genre like a cat toying with a mouse, you'll enjoy this collection of strange tales.
Great writing...highly recommend this. I would love to see more of his work! I am an english instructor and can truly appreciate great, creative writing.
A friend of mine asked me to check this out and I was skeptical, but it is a really great read and well worth the time. Give it a chance; you can't beat the price. )
This book feels like the presentation of a number of works from a creative writing class the author took. I'm not saying it's bad, to the contrary I enjoyed these little vignettes though I suppose I would've liked to seen more of them or some of these stories drawn out a bit more. Though the extreme shortness is kinda nice. Nice effort.
